A small amount of white spirit put on a clean white cloth then gently applied to the stain will show you if the oil will move (if it transfers to the cloth). Use sparingly as you do not want to damage the backing of your rug if it is sensitive to solvent based cleaners. If it is a large stain, heavy/dirty oil or simply will not move, and the rug is valuable the best thing to do is contact a local carpet cleaner.
